Day 16: To Whitefish, MT

Thur, Jun 8, 2017
Stats:  Today - 57 miles; 799 miles to date
Elevation climbed: 1765 ft;  30,926 feet to date
Temp. Low: low 50's High: low 80's
Light clouds, nice 5-10 mph tailwind

Today we got an early start, since the sprinklers come on at the Eureka city park at either 7:30 or 9:00 am.  We weren't sure which so we just got going early.

Another reason for the early start was that we wanted to find a bike shop at a reasonable time.  We were in Whitefish by 3:00.  Eating supper, shopping for tomorrows meals, getting to a campground and setting up camp takes a little while so 3:00 was good.

The reason for stopping at a bike shop was to get new tires for Mary's bike.  The rear tire was wearing through so that we could see the next layer underneath.  Her tires had about 1000 miles on them and they weren't very good tires in the first place for a trip like this.  Before this trip I had bought Schwalbe Marathon Plus 700 x 35, which many people use.  We hoped the bike shop had these in the size we wanted and they did.  So we bought them.  Mary was also having trouble with the gears slipping.  They were able to fix that as well.

Today we saw another biker, Duane.  We actually met him a couple of days ago. He's 23 and riding alone, except for the last couple of days when he's been riding with Nick and Spencer.  He's riding coast to coast, Anacortes to Bar Harbor, Maine along the Northern Tier Route.

Tonight we're camping at Whitefish Lake State Park in the hiker/biker section.  These are always cheaper than regular sites.  There are two other guys staying here tonight also, our friends Nick and Spencer.  All four of us have stayed in the same place together several times.  However, they are taking a five day break as Spencer is flying home for his parents 40th wedding anniversary and Nick is flying out to be in a friend's wedding.  We've enjoyed the time we've spent with them and have become good friends.
